Introduction to Homiletics & Old Testament Survey

Students will have a guided experience in expository preaching. The focus of the class will center on understanding how proper hermeneutics drive the sermon in order to produce a clear exegetical idea from the biblical text that lays the foundation for the development of the homiletical idea for the sermon. Simply put, you’ll have a better understanding on how to preach.

This course is a general survey of the Old Testament that gives the student the background for understanding, teaching and applying the principles found through the 39 books of the Old Testament. We will cover the books of the Law of Moses, the historical books, the poetic and wisdom literature of Israel and the prophetical writings of the major and minor prophets. An emphasis will be placed on the characters God chose and used throughout the Old Testament and the key historical events that shaped them and God’s people. We will also follow the ‘scarlet thread” of the Old Testament Scriptures that weaves the theme of redemption from the Old Testament into the New Testament.
